Mental Health Services For Children
Psychiatric Services
Psychiatric Services are provided to youth under the age of 18. The Child and Family Mental Health Division has a psychiatrist, and one or two part - time psychiatry fellows who are assigned to provide psychiatric services to children who are at risk of serious emotional disturbance and/or children and adolescents who have a diagnosis of serious emotional disturbance. All psychiatrists have a medical license to practice in the state of Virginia and are certified in child and adolescent psychiatry through the Virginia Commonwealth University Health System for Children and Adolescents. Psychiatric services from the Child and Family Mental Health Division are also offered to consumers who may be receiving services from other divisions such as Intellectual Disability and Adolescent Substance Abuse. The consumer is oriented for psychiatric services by the primary service provider (PSP), a supervisor or directly by the psychiatrist.
Psychiatric services may include but are not limited to the following:
Psychiatric evaluations (usually approximately one hour in duration)
Medication Management (duration and a frequency depend on the consumer’s medical and psychiatric needs)
Psychiatric consultations as needed
Participating in relevant staffings
Emergency psychiatric evaluations as needed
Determination of certificate of need for other private/public referrals
